That software might be buggy or user-hostile. Since this isn't your standard gantry style CNC the designers probably had to write some custom software to generate G-code. It's probably about as cheap as you can get for a CNC and if it delivers on the stated accuracy, then its almost certainly good enough for the hobbyist. Bottom line, I think this does fill a gap in the market. I think there are a few questions from the consumer standpoint, 1) how accurate is accurate enough for me? 2) how much am I willing to spend? and 3) what are the chances they'll deliver on the kickstarter (idk what phase they're at though, maybe they're already shipping products). The article you linked to provides some estimates of accuracy (~1/64") which seem pretty good. Those questions are more questions for the people designing the machine though. I'm also curious about what they mean when they say "closed loop feedback system" since I'm currently working on a PhD in the dynamics/controls area of mechanical engineering. This could be mitigated by making the machine run slower but then the question arises of exactly how slow is acceptable. The machine could be pushed to move quickly but the quick accelerations at corners/turns would probably introduce some oscillations in the chains which suspend the router. I think that there's probably a fundamental trade-off between speed and accuracy here. It probably won't give 0.001" accuracy but I don't think that's the goal.
